Flying on European Budget Airlines

This past summer my wife and I went on a European trip for a month. Our plan was to spend most of the time in Poland since we went there a couple of years ago, and really enjoyed the people.

Since flying directly to Poland was quite expensive we found tickets to Ireland for about half the price. You may think, why would we fly to Ireland when we are going to Poland. While not many people know this but once you get across the Atlantic Ocean traveling within Europe is quite easy and relatively inexpensive. So once we arrive in Shannon Ireland we just spent the night there and the next day got on an inexpensive European airline flight that took us to Lodz, Poland.

Some of these airlines are not a perfect solution as they are budget airlines with many limitations. The one that was the most difficult to work with was a 15 kg. weight limit for checked baggage. They are very strict on this weight limit. It looks like the way they make much of their money is with the charges when you go over this weight limit, since these charges are very high. Another thing to be aware of is that the seats are very close together in our flight. If you are a tall person you may find it very uncomfortable.

All in all though it was quite an adventure and worked out well.

We spent most of our time in Krakow Poland. It is a beautiful city that dates back to the 1400s in old town. We rented an apartment just five minutes walk from old town and lived with and like the locals.

Interestingly we were only a half a block from our huge farmers market with locally grown vegetables and fruits available every morning. We found though that eating out was much less expensive than even cooking. My wife and I were able to eat dinner for less than five dollars American. We couldn't cook it at home for that.

If you have ever thought about traveling overseas I encourage you to do it. It is an eye-opening experience to see another culture. Since the United States is one of the most expensive places to live, it is relatively inexpensive to travel to most places in the world. In many cases you can live much cheaper overseas then you cannot home. those who love you and you love.
