Traveling With Your Pet-Best Option

Whether you are traveling a short distance or a long distance there are a few things you need to ensure while traveling with your pet. While planning a trip with your pet regardless of the distance you want to ensure its health, safety and comfort. Begin by first considering its needs and then consider all the different option that is available to you.

- Sometimes the Best Option is to leave the Pet at Home
Keep in mind that if you are not able to do some of these things for your pet, it may be a good idea to find a good and reliable pet sitter to keep your dog for you, while you travel alone to your destination and back home again. Many pets may not do so well while traveling such as while riding in a vehicle or traveling by airplane. If it does suffer from being uncomfortable, the best option for it is to leave it at home where it is surrounded by the things it knows and is more comfortable being there.

- Visit the Veterinarian before Traveling
However, if you do take it with you, you may need to talk with your veterinarian and have a health check done and then get a health certificate from the vet. You should make sure that your pet is up to date with all its shots, especially when you are traveling out of state or out of the country. If the animal suffers from any type of motion sickness leaving it at home or finding an all natural solution may be your best option for ensuring its comfort.
While traveling makes sure that you carry with you any type of medications you need as well as a copy of its medical records. Having these available can be helpful if you have need of taking the pet to a new veterinarian, in a strange area who does not know your animal or its medical background. Also, you may want to consider having a microchip inserted so you can keep close tabs on the animal and locate it faster and easier if it becomes lost while traveling to a strange area. Remember, it is better to be safe than to be sorry, when you can prevent the loss of you animal companion.

- Pet ID Tags
Your should already be using pet ID tags to help identify your favorite companion in case it gets out and gets lost while at home. However, this is especially important when traveling. You can include your home phone number or even your cell phone number on the tag. Another good idea is to purchase an additional ID tag when you arrive at your destination that will provide the information needed to contact you where you are staying at your destination. Having two tags can help insure the return of a lost pet when you are in a strange place.

- Safety First Always
While traveling, you need to make sure that your animal is secure. You can do this by making sure that you secure the animal in pet crate while traveling in any vehicle or airplane. Remember to buckle your pet in when traveling by car.
If you use these tips you can better ensure the safety of the animal, health and comfort while traveling with your pet.
