Vacation Preparation Common Sense Tips

Whatever the season we all look forward to our vacations. It's a great time to travel and reconnect with family and friends. Perhaps you're the adventurous type and go somewhere new every year or maybe you return to the same destination, preferring to revisit old favorites. Whatever your choice, in order to ensure your vacation is the best it can be, take a few moments to consider the following tips.

Have a Communication Plan

Whatever your vacation destination may be you will want to be sure that you have some means of communication with family and friends at home. Should there be an emergency either on your end or theirs it will be comforting to be able to stay in touch. You may also want to find out the number for emergency services where you will be staying since the number varies between countries. For example, the number is "911" in the U.S.A, while it is "999" in the United Kingdom.

Mind Your Language

When traveling abroad, you needn't have an emergency or complaint in order to communicate in the local language. No one can fault you for trying and it is simply good manners to do so. That said, try to take a few language classes before your trip. These can be very educational, lots of fun and almost act as a mini vacation. If nothing else, they will give you confidence in your vacation environment. Also, try to find a small phrase book that's easy to carry. These can be invaluable when asking for a myriad of things that come up in everyday life, such as directions, food, the bathroom or simply having a pleasant conversation with one of the friendly locals.

Observe the Weather

Will the weather at your vacation destination be warm or chilly while you're there? Research the seasonal temperature highs and lows as well as the average precipitation. Then prepare accordingly. If you are visiting a place with seasonally hot temperatures, don't over-estimate your ability to cope with the heat. Be sure to pack and use sunscreen with a reasonable SPF, a sunhat and carry plenty of drinking water. Should you begin to feel the effects of the sun, immediately find shade and rest for a little while.

You need to be just as prepared when visiting a colder climate. If rain is in the forecast pack a water repellent jacket or coat. In extreme cases where snow may be possible pack heavy clothing, thick gloves and a hat which will help your body retain heat. If you start to feel extremely cold, experiencing numbness or pain in extremities find shelter and warm yourself gradually.

Do Your Homework

If you are visiting an area which is unfamiliar to you, be sure to do your research and gather the necessary tools. Before leaving home find a reliable guidebook or on-line travel forum for your vacation destination. Here you will find descriptions of the region, including the rougher areas you may want to avoid. Read about the local customs, currency and daily life of the locals. Once you've reached your destination whether driving or walking, carry a map; preferably one with both streets and landmarks clearly labeled. Even if you have a GPS or SatNav it's possible you may experience technical difficulties. A map will be your backup. If you should become lost don't be afraid to stop and ask for directions.

In short, prepare as much as possible before you set off. This will afford you peace of mind and allow you to be able to relax and enjoy your vacation. Now get out there and have fun! You've earned it.
